Arunachal mourns Dr Hazarika’s death

Itanagar, Nov 5: Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society expresses its deep sense of shock at the passing away of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the cultural icon of North East India, who many songs reflected and showcased the true natural beauty of  Arunachal Pradesh.

With his death, Arunachal has lost one of its greatest admirers, said APLS president Sahitya Akademy awardee YD Thongchi and general secretary Tokong Pertin.

Arunachal’s own  icon Bengia Hemata, who had arranged Bhupenda’s visit to Itanagar when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared Arunachal a Union Territory on 20th January 1972 to sing his self composed ‘Hamara Arunachal’,  also deeply mourned his death. Hemanta sang the Nyishi version of the song which was recorded by the HMV.

Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today expressed shock at the death of the iconic figure.

“In him we have lost an icon of the region and a great friend, philosopher and guide of Arunachal Pradesh,” he said in a message this evening.

“Bhupenda will always be remembered for his emotional attachment with Arunachal Pradesh and his long association with the state in its cultural evolution. His songs like the Siangor Galong…of 1961 and the Tirap himantor…of 1966 created an emotional bondage between the tribes of Arunachal and people of Assam. His music became a bridge between the people of the hills and the plains”, the CM said in a message from Delhi.

In 1977 the Arunachal Pradesh Government awarded him a Gold Medal for his outstanding contribution towards Tribal Welfare, and Upliftment of Tribal Culture through cinema and music.

The widow of famous writer- late Lummer Dai, Nanni Dai has expressed her profound grief over the passing away of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Recalling the illustrious figure’s contribution towards bolstering the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh ties, she said, “We can never forget Bhupenda’s role in bridging the gap between the two neighbouring states through his soulful music. He had made an indelible mark on the people of Arunachal for cementing its ties with Assam and bringing a sense of peaceful coexistence and harmony between the two States courtesy his unforgettable songs.”

While recalling the relations between her husband, late Lummer Dai and Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Nanni Dai said, “My husband attended the Dada Saheb Phalke Award function at the invitation of Bhupenda. While he was seated among the invitees, Dr Hazarika called Lummer to join him at the dais. Such magnanimous and big-hearted was the man.”

All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union has condoled the death of Bhupen Hazarika. AAPSU remembers his contribution in promoting culture and tradition of North East region at national level and his special love for the people of Arunachal.

A close acquaintance of Bhupenda, septuagenarian B K Ghosh Dastidar, who had the privilege to work with the singer during his early days, said “I have lost a personal friend.”

Vidyamandir, a Coaching Institute also condoled the death of Dr Hazarika.

Nature enthusiast sights new moth

Arif Siddiqui

JAIRAMPUR, Nov 5: After sighting of Bhutan Glory, a rare butterfly in Ziro last September, the region is once again in the top list of researchers. The Nature enthusiasts of Ngunu Ziro under the leadership of Dr. Tage Kanu, unknowingly photographed a new species of Moth during their field trip to Talley Valley Reserve in September 2010.

The photograph was sent to Dr. V Subhalaxmi, Education officer of Bombay Nature History Society (BNHS) for identification which she was able to identify to Genus level. On consultation with international Moth experts in British Natural History Museum and experts from Hong Kong, it was confirmed that this is a new Species for Science. This day-flying moth identified as Zygaenid possibly mimics Bhutan Glory butterfly and thus shares same habitat.

Dr. Shen-Horn Wen from Taiwan University who has been specializing on this genus of moth has agreed to collaborate in describing this species.

There are currently an estimated 1,12,000 to 1,65,000 described species of butterflies and moths within 131 families on this planet. A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order and about ten times the number of species of butterfly, with thousands of species yet to be described.  Most species of moths are nocturnal, but there are many day flying moths also. India including the North East is a home of approximately 15000 to 17000 species of Moths. But of late, the numbers of these Lepidopteron or insects with four wings have dwindled drastically. Around a hundred species of the butterflies are on the verge of extinction in India. The decline has been so rapid, especially in the Third World, that if allowed to go unchecked, it will be irreversible.

“Butterflies are almost always treated as non-target species in wildlife conservation and management programmes. The “Protected Area Network” set up by the government is directed towards “iconic” fauna like the tiger, the Asiatic lion, the elephant and the rhinoceros. While no one has an agenda against butterflies, these small, beautiful and agriculturally important  creatures are often ignored. Butterflies are an indicator of environmental health. Few are aware of the crucial role the butterfly plays in pollination of a large portion of economically important crops and flowering plants, which is second only to the honeybee. The millennia-old silk industry is also dependent on the butterfly. Should the butterfly diversity decline, it will directly affect the country’s agriculture” says Surya Prakash, a famous Lepidopterist and conservationist. Unfortunately, conservation of forest and wildlife is the most grueling or discarded effort to perpetrate in this rapidly progressing world. Because 80% of the local population in Arunachal, the home of many unknown species of smaller world, is directly or indirectly dependant on forest and forest bi-products for livelihood, the laws should be amended carefully to reform deforestation or afforest the barren land. If negligence endure and mindless deforestation continues than the fury of nature will devastate civilization in near future. Common flora and fauna will vanish and those rarest categories will be an example of the past. The developed countries like US where many butterflies are endangered as are their host plants because of depletion in forest cover; the US is now importing live butterflies to rehabilitate them.

“As the Lepidoptera fauna is not thoroughly explored in Arunachal Pradesh and that there are potential of recording new species for science, an extensive project will be planned for the region by the BNHS in near future” says Dr. Subhalaxmi, the Principal Investigator from BNHS who visited the Ziro and Talley Valley Sanctuary September last in pursuit of collecting the type specimen of the Zygaenid Moth. In this short survey conducted by BNHS in Siro Village and Talley Valley reserve of Lower Subansiri the team recorded close to 385 moth species and 68 butterfly species. Of the 385 moth species recorded, 278 species have been identified and remaining 107 species are yet to be identified.

“Many of the moth species are possible new for India and as the unidentified moths are being further studied, we may encounter new species for science as well” she added.

During this 10 days short survey, BNHS team also witnessed some of the Rare butterflies like Tytler’s multi spot flat, Bhutan Glory, Brown Gorgon, Powdered Green Hairstreak, Singe stone, Striped Punch,  White edge bush brown, White Commodore, Bhutan Sergeant, Great Yellow Sailor, Grand Duchess, Manipur Jungle Queen a uncommon one and a Khaki Silver line, a very rare butterfly.

IAF rally and percentage of marks

Dear Editor,

Indian Air Force (IAF) held a rally at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Naharlagun for the state of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland. The Students who secured 50% marks or above in 10+2 CBSE Examination were allowed to attend the rally.

I have secured 56.2% in plus 2 but I was rejected. One of the Airmen did not accept my percentage for Y group (Non-Technical) saying that I was not qualified to attend the rally as I got only 17 marks in Mathematics which was my additional subject. But the fact is that additional subject is not added in the overall percentage. They added my additional subject and divided it by six subjects whereas they should have just taken into account marks of the five subjects.

I want a reply from any IAF officer regarding this.

Yours,

Takar Rie

Dr Jini’s kindness saved my sister

Dear Editor,

My idea of medical service in our state was not very high and those of high medical officers were not better, but to my pleasant surprise, I was proved wrong by Chief Medical Officer, General Hospital, Naharlagun in particular and its staff in general.

On the night of Oct 30, my sister was critically ill and was referred to Guwahati for treatment. Problem of managing an ambulance seemed an uphill task to me, anyway I called up C.M.O, Naharlagun and requested for his help. Frankly I didn't expect much would happen but he took prompt action and arranged an ambulance to take us to Guwahati. I will ever be grateful to him and would not able to repay him ever. If not for him my sister would not have been alive.

I hope people like him will always keep burning the lamp of humanity and other officers should take cue and be sympathetic towards poor and needy.

Yours

D . N . Hina

Capable student leader is the need of the hour

Dear Editor,

The XVIth Biennial Conference-Cum-Election of the All Mishmi Students’ Union (AMSU) commences from 3rd November at Sunpura in Lohit. Established in the year 1978 with the motto to serve the Mishmi Society, it was initially a vocal pressure group. It acted  as a vigilant watchdog which would growl, bark and bite whenever the interests of the Mishmis were infringed upon. Upholding its motto, the AMSU since its inception played many significant roles for its society, such as fostering brotherhood among the Mishmis, organizing social services in the villages, guarding the native’s land from encroachment by outsiders and refugees, dissuading the sale of native’s land to outsiders and educating them about its long term implications etc. Similarly, the union leaders were elected on the basis of their integrity and leadership qualities.

But of late, it’s conspicuously seen that the union elections have turned into a political arena. The candidates are affiliated to one or the other politicians. The elections are fought under their auspice, who support the candidate of their choice. To ensure their victory, the political patrons entice the voters with money and other allurements. Obviously after emerging victorious, these student leaders would bend to the interest of their political boss. Instead of becoming a true student leader, they become the Netaji’s stooge, who dances to the latter’s tune by often keeping at bay the community's interest. Under the leadership of such dubious leaders, the union deflects from its motto. In such a scenario, many capable candidates without political affiliations are ignored and the union is deprived of a strong leader. Consequently, the credibility of the union is at stakes. In absence of strong civil bodies of the Mishmis, AMSU is expected to play a host of roles, such as stress on quality education, launch tirade against the opium menace, check the influx of migrants, prevent the marginalization of Mishmis politically and uphold the dignity of the natives, etc.

The need of the hour is of a capable student leader, who can galvanize the dormant youth power to work selflessly for the society. The student community needs to understand that the union election is not only about raving up and casting their votes. They should ensure that they vote for a candidate, who can deliver the goods without fear and prejudice.

Yours,

Suraj Tayang

Ban, hoarding and inflated prices

Dear Editor,

I would like to post some comment on banning of tobacco products, by various fly by night organizations. I do accept the negative aspects of tobacco consumption, but as an adult member of the society, it is my right and choice to indulge in whatever vices I want to without hurting the sentiments of the majority. Yes smoking, tiranga consumption among school children is rampant and it should be discouraged through awareness and one should not forget the role of parents and family, plus legislations have been passed to control it. Society as a whole should act these organizations has no authority to ban things whatever it maybe.

Does banning really solve the problem? It only leads to hoarding and inflated prices. A pack of cigarettes costing Rs 25 is being sold at Rs 50. The only ones profiting are vendors and wholesalers. The administration doesn’t seem to care. You get cigarette at Rs 25 at district whereas in the capital of a state the rules are openly floated by everyone. It explains the sorry state of affairs. The govt could start on a positive footing if prices are checked on every items used by the common people, though it may sound ridiculous but drops makes an ocean.

Lastly use your precious pages for useful news, not for any know all organizations.

Yours,

Gampu Pertin

What is the motive behind such sudden compassion?

Dear Editor,

The Heri Youth Welfare Association strongly condemn 7 days ultimatum by one Yumlam Achung, who claims to be president of All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) wherein he demanded renaming of Indira Gandhi Park as Heri Tai Memorial. Heri Tai is a martyr of the Nyishi community who laid down his life for the greater cause of the Nyishi community. We the family members of late Heri Tai are at pain to read the local dailies of November 2 issue where one Yumlam Achung so called president of ANYA demanded the State Govt to rename Indira Gandhi Park as Heri Tai Memorial Park. The entire Heri clan does not support such meaningless demand which smack of political motive and malafide intention.

The 7 days ultimatum is uncalled for and is an act to take undue advantage for selfish motive and thereby defaming the supreme sacrifice of late Heri Tai.

The family members of late Heri Tai under the banner of All Heri Youth Welfare Association out rightly reject and strongly condemn the demand of Yumlam Achung and group. Heri clan does not recognize Yumlam Achung led ANYA and strongly warns them not to interfere in our family matter.

What is the motive behind such sudden compassion for late Heri Tai? Yumlam Achung may kindly clarify on why he did not express condolence to the bereaved family by visiting them at their home? Why he did not visit RK Mission Hospital when he was admitted there and taking his last breath? Why he did not attend the funeral which was attended by every member from Nyishi community?

Moreover, Yumlam Achung or his representatives did not take the consent of late Heri Tai family before demanding renaming of the Park to the State Govt.

Regarding the Heri Tai case, the Heri clan strongly believes that matter will be seriously taken up by the NES, ANSU and legislators of the Nyishi community.

Therefore, the Heri clan warns Yumlam Achung led ANYA and any organization in future to refrain from playing with the sentiments of Heri clan and make mockery of the supreme sacrifice of late Heri Tai for their selfish interest.

The All Heri Youth Association also demands to the state government to nab the culprits who shot late Heri Tai on 11 October, 2011 at IG Park and award exemplary punishment.

Yours,

Heri Tapum,

President

Heri Maju

Spokesperson, AHYWA

Some sense

Dear Editor,

Public Sense, albeit the absence of it is a pan India occurrence particularly so in case of our beloved state.

Take for instance, the ATM Booth. Go to any ATM kiosk and one will see it all swarmed by people. To top it all, you have a separate queue for the women folk, so much so for gender equality which I believe is typical of Arunachal only. This crowding of the ATM kiosk defeats the very purpose of a secure ATM Pin no.

It is very clear even from a layman's perspective that a criminal minded person can easily manipulate the situation and can rob a person. It would be far better if we be a bit patient and show a bit of common sense as well and stand in a queue outside rather than cram the insides.

The same people when they go out to some other states are all courtesy and gentleman personified, they waits, follow the rules etc. Wonder why they can't do the same in their hometown!

Efforts to meet the needs of poor

The United Nations adopted eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the year 2000 which has become a universal ramework for development to achieve better future for all. The Goals have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest. The global community decided to achieve these goals by 2015.

The publication Keep the Promise: Millennium Development Goals throws light on various MDGs and explains the opportunities offered by India to achieve those MDGs through various case studies.

The UN firmly believes that Goals remain achievable through national ownership and inspired leadership, both of which are indispensable to accelerating progress on the MDGs.

To achieve inclusiveness in all these dimensions requires multiple interventions, and success depends not only on introducing new policies and government programmes, but on institutional and attitudinal changes.

At a time when the race to end poverty is at such a crucial juncture, this publication upholds, celebrates and renews the concerns for the human condition.
